WORKING WITH THE IACUC

ANIMAL CARE AND USE RESEARCH TRAINING SITE

WHO IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE TRAINING?

Principal investigators, and all personnel listed on the application will need to complete the training.  IACUC members have a separate test (Essentials for IACUC Members) which they are required to complete.

WHEN DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE THE TRAINING?

Effective 07/01/03, all principal investigators and lab personnel are required to complete the online CITI training before approval of any proposal is granted by the IACUC. The principal investigators should ensure that all personnel listed on the application have completed the training prior to submission. Approval will not be granted until all personnel listed on the application have completed this training. IACUC members are also requested to take their exam.

Effective 9/1/2009 all principal investigators and lab personnel are required to retake the CITI training every 3 years. Approvals will not be granted until expired CITI training has been completed.

HOW DO I BEGIN THE TRAINING COURSE?

Go to the training site at
CITI - Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative

Click on “Web Courses and Exams” at the bottom of the page.  Follow the instructions for a “new user” to obtain a username and password.  You must link your records to your institution in order for our office to see that you have completed the course.  To do this, click on “I want to link my records to my institution” after your username and password have been accepted.  Our institution does not appear in their list, so please click on “My institution is not listed.”  Enter the following “Institutional Access Code” “MaineMed” (without the “” and it is not case sensitive), then click on “I have entered my institutional access code.”  Complete the required information, and click “submit.”  The next page will be the “Main Menu” window, click on “Web Courses and Exams.”  Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click on “Course” under “Working with the IACUC.”

DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE ANY OF THE QUIZZES TO TAKE THE EXAM?

No.  You may skip directly to the exam without reviewing any of the material in the course, or completing the quizzes.  We recommend viewing the entire course, and taking the self assessment quizzes at the end of every chapter, as you need an 85% to pass the exam.  To skip the course, click on “Exam” instead of “Course.”

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COMPLETE THIS COURSE?

We recommend setting aside 2-3 hours to complete the entire course, and take the exam.  Please be sure to print your completion certificate at the end, and forward a copy to our office.

WHO DO I CONTACT IF I HAVE A QUESTION?

Please call the Office of Research Affairs at 885-8183.  The Maine Medical Center administrator for the course is Linda Reinholdtsen, Research Compliance Administrator, 885-8195, reinhl@mmc.org.
